Take a spin with Golden Graham's choice album reviews

Clive John

Purple Sky

A self-packaged second album from 25-year-old Clive John sees this home-grown talent offering 14 of his own songs for a vividly colourful carnival of pleasure.

Clive has a stimulating rich voice that ideally compliments his songwriting talent, creating a package of rare mastery on the British country music scene. This remarkable combination of gifts will soon see Clive gaining a significant foothold in country music. Already twice making #3 on the European country charts, Clive is destined to be further elevated to prominence as interest is further gained through increased airplay on both British, European and American radio.

A lively opener searches the realms of tripping over into the arms of love with 'The Lucky One', while the little track slows us down as we soar high into a 'Purple Sky', letting life's problems drift away. 'Cloud 9' also lifts us up onto those balls of cotton wool, with a laid back dreamy bask in lazy summer sunshine. A sense-laden ballad comes in the form of 'Those Summer Days' and a hazy look at love that has past by and left regret in place of what could have been. 'Secret' opens the soul with the mysteries that lurk deep inside most of us and reveals the skeletons that come to haunt our innermost feelings. The final track follows the time-tested subject of escaping from our worries in the mist of soothing intoxicants, as we are invited to 'Relax And Pour The Wine'.

Purple Sky delivers an ideal kaleidoscope, from the quiet strength of ballads to stirring up-tempos from this young man who is assuredly destined to make his mark on country music in a big way. Clive is already seeing International record companies expressing interest in him.
