After performing on stage at the Legends Of
Western Swing Festival, Jake Hooker was kind enough to find
some time to talk about his style of music.
"We go for more of...we call it Texas Swing,
kind of Ray Price, Johnny Bush type of Texas dance hall style
of music...the kind that I grew up on and all the boys. They've
got a thing called Texas music which is kinda weird stuff,
but it used to be that Texas music was Ray Price and Johnny
Bush, so that is what we do. We're real pickie about doing
it right and playing it the way it's supposed to be played.
So that's kinda what we're about. Fiddle player Bobby Flores
plays for Ray Price when he's on the road and Reggie plays
with Charlie Pride most of the time, they are really great
guys."
Jake explained a little about his early influences
and the music that he was brought up on.
"First of all my dad brought me up on Bob Wills
and Ray Price...Ray Price was his man! So it was Ray Price
and Johnny Bush since I was a kid and I really dig it. My
brother plays guitar and every now and then dad would have
a party at the house and they would play when we were just
little. I guess that is how we got hooked on it and I always
wanted to go to the dances and when I got to go I would just
watch, I didn't care about what was going on...just watch
the musicians, I thought it was real neat, I just wanted to
learn, I just loved it."
Jake gave me his thoughts on why Texas seems
to hold a bigger interest country music.
"You know, I don't know if it has something
to do with certain places like Fort Worth...they call that
Cow Town and that is a big deal! I mean the music scene in
Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio, basically are the three
big parts that you will see it and there is a variety of music
and a difference in all three. We play mainly weekend things
at the dance halls. There are not many dance halls left, but
there are a few."
