A true Honky Tonk singer, Gene Watson's career took a
massive upturn when he charted at #3 in 1975 with the steamy
"Love In The Hot Afternoon". This was the title of
Watson's debut album on Capitol and was the first 2 for 1 CD
released by British label Hux Records in 2002 coupled with
the album Paper Rosie, bringing critical acclaim from the
British country media and success form the British record
buying public.
In the mid to late 70's Gene Watson scored no less
than seventeen top twenty hits with Capitol seeing ten
making the Top-Ten. Watson has long been a favourite with
British audiences and around March 2004 underwent a tour in
Ireland with British fans travelling to the Emerald Isle to
take in several of Gene Watson's shows.
Following the success of that first 2 for 1 Gene Watson
Hux released a Billie Jo
Spears 2 for 1 CD in . Now a second Gene Watson 2 for 1
release sees Capitol albums Because You Believed In Me (1976)
and Beautiful Country (1978) released back to back on one
CD. On this 2 for 1 you're treated to 20 scintillating tracks
all digitally re-mastered by Hux to offer the best possible
sound.
Pure Gene Watson Honky Tonk pours from this 2 for 1
album capturing Watson at his best and includes a further
five of his matchless hits. The title track (and single)
from the original album saw "Because You Believed In
Me" make #20 in 1976, followed by the crying steel
fueled and heartbreaking "Her Body Couldn't Keep You
Off My Mind" stalling at #52 in the charts. In 1977
Watson charted at #8 with the beautiful tender love-song
"I Don't Need A Thing At All" and also saw the
jazz styled "The Old Man And His Horn" making #11
that same year. A great mid-tempoed thought provoker rose to
#11 in 1978 with "Cowboys Don't Get Lucky All The
Time". Other wonderful tracks to be found from Gene
Watson includes the atmospheric "Sorry Willie" a
song said to be written by Roger Miller after having brief
fling with Willie Nelson's first wife Martha. There is also
a host of other great tracks here to have you waltzing and
two-steppin round the living room.
Gene Watson is a great performer and hopefully we'll
see him back here in the UK. I had the greatest pleasure of
seeing him give a sensational performance in Texas during
2001 just after his operation for colon cancer. After I
reviewed the first Gene Watson 2 for 1 CD from Hux I was
overwhelmed with messages from people asking me where they
could find more of Gene Watson's music. With Hux 2 for 1,
Because You Believed In Me/ Beautiful Country you can again
enjoy some of the very best music from one of the very best
voices in country music……….Gene Watson!!!
